Back again with another vibe/Rant telling you what I’m vibing with and what I’ve been ranting about recently in the wacky world of music.
Drake’s Fire in the Booth: RANT
Everything about this makes me sick. Whether it’s Charlie Sloth repeatedly being his annoying self by over hyping Drake as “the best rapper in the world” or it’s Drake being a massive culture vulture once again. The freestyle does feel like it was off the top, simply because it was so damn bad. Drake isn’t the best rapper in the game and his embarrassing FITB proven it. For a 7 minute 37 second video it’s safe to say that Drake might rap for 3 minutes maximum. It’s the most monotone freestyle I’ve heard for a while, we all know Juice Wrld can do better.
Childish Gambino’s Summer Pack: Vibe
He’s only gone and done it again. Childish Gambino is back with two new songs titled as the Summer Pack. Summertime Magic and Feels Like Summer are both groovy bops that suit the project not just in name but in style. It feels like it belongs with Gambino’s 2014 EP Kauai for it’s smooth feel. Two quality tunes that belong on any summer playlist. Gambino is hitting home runs with every shot and I can’t wait for a full project to emerge, whether that’s a solo one or his rumoured collab with Chance the Rapper.
BROCKHAMPTON 1999 WILDFIRE: Vibe
I’ll be honest, when I first heard this song I wasn’t crazy on it, but after a few listens I really started getting addicted to it. Kevin Abstract’s hook is insanely addictive and it’s followed by one Matt Champion who snaps. While I’m not overly hyped on Joba’s verse the song soon picks up again with brilliance from Bearface who seems to be getting a more prominent role in the group following the dismissal of Ameer Vann. Overall this a step in the right direction and proves that the group won’t suffer without Ameer.
XXL Freshmen Cyphers: Vibe
Generally speaking we got some amazing quality from this years batch of XXL cyphers, particularly from three individuals, J.I.D, Ski Mask and Stefflon Don. All three had the most energy and unique style. Whether it was Ski Mask cutting the beat in respect for his late friend XXXTentacion or Stefflon Don and J.I.D snapping, there was something for everyone. The rest of the freshmen performed fairly well considering the circumstances, but the three mentioned along with Smokepurpp are the ones to watch.
Trippie Redd: RANT
It didn’t have to be this way, Trippie. For those of you who don’t know, XXL Freshmen Trippie Redd was set to be part of the freshmen cyphers. That is until he refused to take part because of the ‘whack’ beat he was meant to rap over. Considering how much publicity the XXL freshmen list gets its rappers, it’s a disgrace for Trippie Redd to refuse to do the freestyle. If it was down to me, he’d be removed from the freshmen list. He’s an arrogant artist who is very quickly losing the traction he has built in the last year or so. All he had to do was his job, he didn’t have to be special, just show up.
