Grammy Nominations- Who Should Win?

Mental health is a massive problem that’ll never go away, and this song did nothing but promote the issue and help thousands of people out, and a Grammy could only help that further.

Yesterday, the academy released the list of nominations for the 60th Annual Awards, there was a few major mistakes this year but all in all this year they have really done well in pinning down the best tracks, albums and artists. Here’s a list of the nominations and who I think should be winning the awards.

Record of the Year

  • Redbone- Childish Gambino (Should win)
  • Despacito- Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee and Justin Bieber
  • The Story of O.J- Jay-Z
  • HUMBLE- Kendrick Lamar
  • 24K Magic- Bruno Mars

Who’d have thought that Gambino would be so heavily nominated? It’s well deserved and he’s set to take home some gold, I wouldn’t be shocked if Despacito picked up the award for being so heavily played, but if we are talking about which record is the best, it’s between Gambino and Kendrick here.

Album of the Year

  • Awaken, My Love!- Childish Gambino
  • 4:44- Jay- Z
  • DAMN- Kendrick Lamar (should win)
  • Melodrama- Lorde
  • 24K Magic- Bruno Mars

I’m a massive fan of this, as far as the Grammy’s go it’s somewhat expected to see Jay-Z on there, and I’d be genuinely happy for Gambino, Lorde or Kendrick here, all three albums are monumental. There’s a few albums that should be on here, Vince Staples definitely springs to mind, but the Grammy’s will always do it their way.

Song of the Year

  • Despacito- Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee and Justin Bieber
  • 4:44- Jay-Z
  • Issues- Julia Michaels
  • 1-800-273-8255- Logic (should win)
  • That’s What I Like- Bruno Mars

Is it the best song ever? Certainly not, but there’s a message here that is rarely heard through song, it’s the song that this year without a doubt has done the most in terms of helping people and changing perceptions of a problem. Mental health is a massive problem that’ll never go away, and this song did nothing but promote the issue and help thousands of people out, and a Grammy could only help that further. The biggest problem is that the Grammy’s chose not to include a certain Lil Uzi Vert track off a lot of lists.

Best New Artist

  • Alessia Cara
  • Khalid
  • Lil Uzi Vert (should win)
  • Julia Michaels
  • SZA

It was between Uzi and SZA here, SZA had one cracking album, but Uzi has the best song of the year for me as well as his feature in Bad and Boujee. Two of the biggest songs of the year and a really good album simply cannot be ignored.

Best Pop Vocal Album

  • Kaleidoscope EP – Coldplay
  • Lust for Life – Lana Del Rey (should win)
  • Evolve – Imagine Dragons
  • Rainbow – Kesha
  • Joanne – Lady Gaga
  • ÷ – Ed Sheeran

Ed Sheeran will most likely win but oh well, Lana Del Rey killed it and deserves that credit, in fact I think she’s not got nearly enough credit this year for what was a fantastic album, with Sheeran’s being somewhat average.

Best Dance/Electronic Album

  • Migration – Bonobo
  • 3-D The Catalogue – Kraftwerk
  • Mura Masa – Mura Masa (should win)
  • A Moment Apart – Odesza
  • What Now – Sylvan Esso

What an album Mura Masa released. Not only is it by far and away the best album for this Grammy, it’s one of the best albums of the year all together, and it’s chronically overlooked when people discuss that.

Best Alternative Music Album

  • Everything Now – Arcade Fire
  • Humanz – Gorillaz (should win)
  • American Dream – LCD Soundsystem
  • Pure Comedy – Father John Misty
  • Sleep Well Beast – The National

This is a really really solid set of nominations. People could easily give arguments for any of these albums, but Gorillaz pip it for me, but I would be happy to see Arcade Fire or LCD Soundsystem win, and I know one of my good friends at Viberant would be extremely happy with a Father John Misty win.

Best R&B Performance

  • Get You- Daniel Caesar featuring Kali Uchis (should win)
  • Distraction- Kehlani
  • High- Ledisi
  • That’s What I Like- Bruno Mars
  • The Weekend- SZA

Not only is this by far and away the best R&B performance, it’s one of the best songs of the year for me. I’d actually go as far to say this is the song I’ve played the most this year, it’s just brilliant in every single way, Caesar has one of the best voices in music and I love his lyricism.

Best R&B Album

  • Freduian – Daniel Caesar (should win)
  • Let Love Rule – Ledisi
  • 24K Magic – Bruno Mars
  • Gumbo – PJ Morton
  • Feel The Real – Musiq Soulchild

It should win for me, but I have no doubt that Bruno Mars will take it, which I wouldn’t be too mad about, his album was brilliant and he’s an amazing artist, but Caesar has to have made one of my favourite R&B albums of the decade, it’s magnificent in every way.

Best Rap/Sung Performance
  • PRBLMS – 6LACK
  • Crew – Goldlink featuring Brent Faiyaz & Shy Glizzy (should win)
  • Family Feud – JAY-Z featuring Beyoncé
  • LOYALTY. – Kendrick Lamar featuring Rihanna
  • Love Galore – SZA featuring Travis Scott

In a category with the insane good Love Galore and two duos of Jay- Z and Beyonce, and Kendrick and Rihanna I find it almost impossible that I’ll get what I want here, but if we’re being honest Crew is one of the most underrated songs of the year, and I find it much better than the big names here, I’d settle for SZA and Travis, though.

Best Rap Song

  • Bodak Yellow- Cardi B
  • Chase Me- Danger Mouse featuring Run the Jewels and Big Boi
  • HUMBLE.- Kendrick Lamar (should win)
  • Sassy- Rapsody
  • The Story of O.J- Jay- Z

I really wouldn’t be surprised to see Cardi B or Jay- Z take one of these awards home at some point, but if they win it over one of Kendrick Lamar’s masterpieces I’ll be very unhappy. HUMBLE. was one of the best tracks of the year commercially and critically and is miles ahead of any of the tracks on what is, in my opinion, a very poorly thought out list.

Best Rap Album

  • 4:44 – JAY-Z
  • DAMN. – Kendrick Lamar (should win)
  • Culture – Migos
  • Laila’s Wisdom – Rapsody
  • Flower Boy – Tyler, the Creator

Before I get onto my negatives let’s start with a massive positive, Tyler has got his nomination he very much deserves, and for me he’s number two on this list. Now the negatives, where is Vince Staples’ Big Fish Theory? Where is Joey Bada$$’ All Amerikkkan Bada$$? Two of the very best albums of the year let alone in the rap catagory. I’m super happy with the inclusion of Kendrick (expected) and Tyler (unexpected) but to not include some major names is genuine madness

Best Music Video

  • Up All Night- Beck
  • Makeba- Jain
  • The Story of O.J- Jay- Z
  • HUMBLE- Kendrick Lamar
  • 0-800-273-8255- Logic (should win)

If you haven’t seen this I urge you to watch the music video, it’s as emotional as the song itself, it’s directed brilliantly and follows a truly inspirational story. I cannot express how much this song has done for people, the title of the song is the suicide hotline number in America, who saw there number of phone calls increase massively after the songs success, Logic is an artist who uses his platform for good, and this is one of the most feelgood stories of the year in the end, it’s done nothing but great things.
